Non-Stranger Sexual Violence (Acquaintance/Date Rape)
Perpetrators of non stranger sexual violence, or more commonly referred to as acquaintance and date rape, prefer to know their victim because it gives them a chance to place the victim in a vulnerable position without raising their alarm.
Too often, the danger is recognized too late.
On first dates, try to go on a double date with someone you know. Avoid being left alone with your date until you know and trust that person.
If a double date can't be arranged, play it safe and agree to meet at a restaurant or other mutually agreeable public location. Take your own car. Allow yourself time to get to know someone before being alone with them.
Always carry extra cash for a phone call and for transportation home.
Don't be afraid to call your parents or a friend you trust to come pick up--regardless of the hour--if your personal safety is at risk. If you're afraid of getting in trouble for being somewhere you're not supposed to be, remember this; it's better to get in trouble for being late or for being somewhere you shouldn't have been, than to get raped.
If you've been sexually assaulted, call 911 immediately and report the assault. It's important that you go to the hospital for a sexual assault exam and evidence collection. If possible, don't go to the bathroom or drink anything, or change clothing until after you have been examined. Most important: Remember, IT WAS NOT YOUR FAULT!
